After the coast around Cape Town, Route 62 leads inland through the valleys and small towns of the Klein Karoo. Around Montagu, Barrydale and Calitzdorp, the journey links orchards, vineyards and dry mountain scenery.
Let the overnight stops shape the journey
The appeal lies as much in the stops as in the riding. Lunch in a small town, mountain views from a terrace, then an afternoon on the road to the next overnight stop. Begin planning with where you would like to stay and how much time you want to spend riding each day.
There are several ways to reach this part of the country from Cape Town. A route through the Winelands or over a mountain pass can add interest, but it also needs a realistic place in the day’s riding time.
Choosing your detours
Away from the main route, some passes and tracks require different preparation. A detour towards the Swartberg depends on more than its position on the map: the road surface, weather, rental terms and your experience all need to suit the plan.
Choose the motorcycle for the whole itinerary. A cruiser that works well on longer road stages may not be the right choice for a gravel excursion.
How long should you allow?
The right length depends on how far you want to travel, what you would like to visit and the route back. Continuing to Oudtshoorn and returning via the coast makes this a touring journey rather than a short excursion. A few extra days can reduce the daily mileage and leave more time at each stop.
Start with the time you have, rather than a long list of places to fit in. That often leaves room for the moments that make the journey your own.
